How to set up IPTV on Apple TV

Apple TV (tvOS) uses IPTV player apps from the App Store. Many of the best tvOS players are paid apps or offer a subscription to the developer; a few are free. Once installed, signing in works the same way as on other devices.

A couple browse a film in the Xtreme HD IPTV interface on a wall-mounted television.

What you need

  • An Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K signed in with an Apple ID
  • Your sign-in details from Xtreme HD IPTV
  • Optionally an iPhone or iPad for easier typing (the Apple TV remote app or keyboard prompts)

Step by step

  1. Open the App Store on the Apple TVSearch for “IPTV player” and read the descriptions. Check that the player supports Xtream Codes or M3U playlists and note whether it is free or paid.
  2. Install the playerSelect Get (or the price) and confirm with your Apple ID. Any purchase is made with the app developer, not with Xtreme HD IPTV.
  3. Open the player and choose how to sign inPick Xtream Codes or M3U on the setup screen. When a text field appears, an iPhone or iPad nearby will offer to type for you, which is much quicker than the remote.
  4. Enter your sign-in detailsChoose “Xtream Codes” (server address, username, password) or “M3U playlist” (a single link) and enter the details we sent you exactly as written. Both methods connect to the same subscription.
  5. Let the player load the categoriesThe first load can take a minute while the app downloads the channel list and, where included, the programme guide. Subsequent starts are faster.
  6. Start watching and adjust settingsOpen a live category to confirm playback, then explore the player’s settings for favourites, hidden categories, buffer size and subtitles.

Tips

  • Apple TV 4K has an Ethernet port; a wired connection gives the most consistent playback.
  • If you also use an iPhone or iPad, many tvOS players share settings through iCloud so you only enter details once.
  • Set Settings → Video and Audio → Match Content to reduce judder on film content.
