When you add a subscription to a player app you are usually offered two ways to sign in: Xtream Codes or an M3U playlist. Both connect to the same subscription, but they work differently and suit different situations. This article explains the difference so you can pick the right one for your player.
Xtream Codes login
The Xtream Codes method uses three pieces of information: a server address, a username and a password. The player talks to the server through an API, which means it can request live channels, on-demand content, series and programme guide data separately and keep them organised. Because the player asks the server for updates, changes to the line-up appear automatically.
Advantages: cleaner category structure, artwork and descriptions for on-demand content, guide data without a separate link, and faster start-up because the player does not need to download a large playlist every time.
M3U playlist link
The M3U method uses a single link to a playlist file that contains every stream. Any player or media application that can open a playlist can use it, which makes it the most widely compatible option. The trade-off is that the player has to download and parse the whole playlist, and guide data usually needs a separate EPG link.
Advantages: works in almost any application, including desktop media players; easy to move between devices; useful when a player does not support the Xtream Codes API.
Which should you use?
- If your player supports Xtream Codes, use it. The organisation and guide integration are better.
- If you use a general media player on a computer, or a player that only accepts playlists, use the M3U link.
- If categories look messy or on-demand content is missing with M3U, switch to Xtream Codes in a supporting player before assuming something is wrong with the subscription.
Can I use both?
Yes. Both methods use the same account, so you can sign in with Xtream Codes on the living-room TV and use the M3U link on a laptop. The simultaneous-stream limit of the subscription still applies across all of them.
Keep your details safe
Both the login and the playlist link identify your account. Do not share them publicly. If you need to give a device to someone else, sign out of the player first.
Our installation guide shows where to enter each method in the most common players, and the M3U playlists article goes deeper into how playlists work.
